According to British publication Mail Online, the city of Birmingham is dropping apostrophes from road and street signs. Apparently, there were already so many apostropheless signs -- signs for places like Kings Norton, Acocks Green and Druids Heath -- that theyve given up.
I dont yet know how Ill feel about this once Ive formed an opinion. But I do know one thing: Im 100% sure that they should elect Cormac McCarthy as mayor.

Nails on the chalkboard of my grammar-lovin' sensibilities.
I have a feeling that's the way the winds are blowing -- especially because so many of those little change 'em yourself signs are so apostrophe unfriendly.
Plus, newspapers are now using every possible excuse to interpret possessives as modifiers: teachers union -- stuff like that.
Maybe it'll someday evolve to a system that doesn't use the same letter for possessives that it uses for plurals. Dogs/dog's. Oy.
Zwicky says that no punctuation is used on most signs in the US, and yet chaos does not reign.
I'm with you. The slippery-slope arguments ("Help, the language is going to hell!") don't gibe with history.
The real danger is that I'll have to learn anew how to correct people!
(Kidding. Sort of.)
