Satisfying Moments in Copy Editing -- One in an occasional series on writing errors I’m surprised I caught

The sentence*:
“With recent trends in fashion and the new color palettes, many women are
adapting a new attitude toward cosmetics.”

The catch:

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
changed "adapting" to "adopting."

* Sentence modified to protect the author and my job.

Indeed, that is a good catch. They might be "adapting" an attitude, but it would make more sense to adapt the old one since the new is already . . . new.

Thanks.

I know it's silly to be so proud of somethin' like that. But, by nature, I'm a head-in-the-clouds-type person. So it's a thrill when I can reap the benefits of forcing my focus down to earth.

Excellent catch! And no, it's not silly to be proud. Revel in it.
