Never looked it up till now, though. Sure enough, American Heritage supposes that "kooky" came from "cuckoo."

The cooking kook! I think I used to work with that guy. He would sit in the kitchen at the seafood restaurant where I worked and ask all the waitresses: You want fish with that?
