There's a comic strip called "Momma."
Today I saw a bumper sticker, "Another mama for Obama."
Webster's New World College Dictionary allows all three spellings but prefers "mama."
It just goes to show you: Sometimes, the English language is a real mother.

I think the point is that Mom is just that important. Kinda trinitarian too. Not sure exactly what that means here but it must mean something.
Sorry it took so long to get your post up. I've been a little under the weather -- though, luckily, I found the strength to watch three hours of "Lost" last night.
For me, the "mama" thing is kind of irksome because it's one of the issues for which I got it in my head there's a "right" and a "wrong." In my mind, "mama" is "right." Though, of course, I now know that's nothing more than a preference.
I think "mama" is truer to Spanish/Latin forms and "momma" reflects an Americanized take on "mama." But I'm just guessing.
